Rooted in Durham

A Local Partner, Not a National Chain

When the big restoration chains roll out after the work is done, we're still here. When you refer Cornerstone, you're sending your client to someone who's part of the same community you serve.

Born and Raised in Durham

I was born and raised in Bowmanville and have lived in Durham Region my whole life. This isn't a territory I service. It's home.

  • A lifetime Durham Region resident.
  • Based in Oshawa, serving Durham and the GTA.
  • We know the homes and the local code.

35+ Years Building Here

I've been building in Durham for over 35 years. My family's roots here run even deeper.

  • Over 35 years building in Durham.
  • My father ran Brock's BP, then Brock's Service Centre / Petro-Canada, in Bowmanville for over 35 years.
  • Two generations rooted in this community.

Family Owned and Run

Cornerstone is a family owned and run business. When you send us a client, you're trusting a local family — not a national chain.

  • A family business, not a franchise.
  • Still here long after the job is done.
  • Same town, same name, same people.

What This Protects

Every Referral Protects Three Things

When you send a client to Cornerstone, you're not just passing along a name. You're protecting your client, your reputation, and the file.

Your Client Is Cared For

Your client gets a calm, professional team that handles the loss from start to finish. The hardest part of their year is made easier — because you sent them to us.

Your Name Is Protected

A bad claim can cost you a client. We make sure the work is done right, so the trust your client puts in you only grows. You look good because we do good work.

The File Is Documented

We document the full loss clearly and to code. If the claim is ever questioned, your client already has the paperwork they need — and you're never left explaining a gap.

In short —We don't pay you to refer. We protect the client you sent us, so the relationship you built stays yours. That's the whole deal.

Broker Case Study

The Scope Gap a Referred Client Would Have Discovered Too Late

A Durham Region water loss damaged three levels of a home. Before accepting the carrier's rebuild settlement, the homeowner asked Cornerstone for an independent review of the scope.

Rebuild Scope — Side by Side

Carrier's contractor rebuild (all-in)~$73,000
Cornerstone rebuild (all-in)~$133,000

~$60,000

in code, labour, and line-of-sight rebuild scope the original estimate did not include — every dollar itemized and tied to a code section, an IICRC standard, or the policy's own basis-of-settlement language. Nothing padded.

What the Review Found

  • Electrical code deficiencies not in the original scope.
  • Documented mould growth that went unaddressed.
  • Drywall scoped at roughly half the opened area.
  • Line-of-sight finishes omitted in several rooms.
  • A wetted wall never opened or moisture-tested.
  • Work-at-height labour the original estimate didn't allow for.

And we corrected a charge in the carrier's favour — a double-counted vanity that brought one room's figure below the carrier's number. The goal is an accurate file, not a bigger one.

Broker Partner FAQ

Common Questions

Common questions from the insurance brokers we work with across Durham Region and the GTA, about our restoration and referral process.

Is there any cost to me or my brokerage?
No. Joining the broker partner program is free, and so is referring a client. There is no fee to you or your brokerage — ever. Your client pays only for the restoration work they choose.
Does referring us put my brokerage at E&O risk?
It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that any referral can carry some exposure. The main one is what is called negligent referral — a claim that you sent a client to someone you should have known was unqualified. That risk goes up when a referral comes with a fee or a personal guarantee. We are built to keep that risk low. We are a licensed, insured Ontario corporation, and we will show you our coverage and credentials anytime. We do not pay referral fees, so you get no financial benefit from sending us a client, which keeps you out of the category insurers watch for. Your client chooses us and signs with us directly, so we are accountable to them, and every claim is fully documented. The safest way to refer anyone is the one your own risk manager would give you: offer your client a couple of qualified options, let them choose, and do not guarantee anyone's results. We are glad to be one of those names. We are not your lawyers, and your E&O policy has its own rules, so check yours — but we have built this partnership to protect your name, not expose it.
What does referring a client actually look like?
It is simple. You send us your client's name and contact, or introduce us by email or phone — whatever you prefer. We take it from there: we reach out, review the loss, and keep you posted. You stay in the loop without doing the work.
Do you contact my client directly, or do I introduce you?
Your call. Some brokers prefer to introduce us so they stay in the conversation. Others pass along the contact and let us reach out. Either way, we always tell your client that you sent us, so you get the credit for the help.
Do you work with the carrier, or against them?
With them. We do not fight your carrier or attack the adjuster. We document the full loss clearly and accurately, so everyone is working from the real cost to restore the home to code. We close the gap — we do not pick a fight.
What if the carrier's contractor has already started work?
We can still help. We will review what has been done, document anything that was missed, and make sure the rest of the work meets code. If a switch makes sense, we make it smooth for your client. If it does not, we will tell you that too.
How do you handle the adjuster relationship?
Professionally and respectfully. We work with adjusters every day. We bring clear documentation and photos so the conversation stays about facts, not opinions. A clean, well-documented file makes the adjuster's job easier too.
Will I get updates on the file's progress?
Yes. You get updates on every file you send us — when we make contact, when work starts, and at the major milestones. You will never have to ask your client how things are going.
What if my client's loss is small?
We help with those too. Not every loss is a full rebuild. For smaller claims we offer quick scope reviews and simple documentation, so your client gets the right help no matter the size of the loss.

From the Founder

"When a broker sends me a client, they're handing me their reputation. I protect it like it's my own — and I make sure their client is taken care of from the first call to the final walkthrough."
