Commercial Retail Renovations

Storefront upgrades, interior reconfigurations, display builds, and full retail fit-outs — built around retail timelines, not construction timelines. We understand that every day your doors are closed is a day of lost sales, and we plan the schedule around that.

What's Involved

Storefront to Sales Floor

A retail renovation covers what your customers see the moment they walk up, and everything behind the scenes that makes the space function on a busy day.

Storefront & Entry

  • Facade and entry upgrades that give your storefront the presence to draw customers in off the street or the plaza.
  • Storefront glazing and door hardware replaced or reconfigured to your layout, with signage rough-in coordinated for your sign contractor.
  • Accessible entry and path of travel planned in from the start, not retrofitted after inspection flags it.

Interior & Sales Floor

  • Layout reconfiguration for sightlines, traffic flow, and fitting rooms or service counters where they belong.
  • Display and fixture rough-in — electrical for lighting and POS, and framing for millwork and built-in displays.
  • Flooring and finishes selected for commercial foot traffic, not residential wear ratings.

Before Any Wall Goes Up

Permits, Code, and Downtime

Retail space in an occupied plaza or strip mall has its own set of rules — and its own pressure to stay open while the work happens.

Building Permit

Interior alterations, new plumbing or electrical, and any layout change to a commercial unit require a building permit through your municipality. We pull and manage it.

Accessibility (AODA)

Public-facing retail space in Ontario has accessibility standards under the AODA — entry, aisle width, and washroom access are checked as part of the plan.

Fire Separation

In a shared plaza or mall, the wall between your unit and the tenant next door has to meet the fire rating your occupancy classification requires.

Scheduling Around Sales

Phased work, after-hours scheduling, or a hard closure window — we build the plan around when you actually need the doors back open.

Common Questions

Retail Renovation FAQ

Do I need a permit for a retail renovation?
In almost every case, yes. Any interior layout change, new plumbing or electrical, or storefront alteration requires a building permit through your municipality. We handle the application and every inspection so it's off your plate.
Can you work outside business hours to avoid disrupting sales?
Often, yes. Depending on the scope, we can schedule work overnight, on off-days, or in phases so parts of the store stay open. We map this out in the proposal before work starts, based on what your business actually needs.
Can you renovate while I'm still open to customers?
Sometimes, for smaller or phased scopes — dust containment, temporary barriers, and after-hours work for the noisiest parts of the job. A full gut renovation usually needs the space closed. We'll tell you honestly which one your project needs.
Do you handle storefront signage or just the interior?
We handle the construction side — glazing, framing, and electrical rough-in for signage — and coordinate directly with your sign contractor for the sign itself. Sign permits are typically a separate municipal application from the building permit.
How long does a retail renovation take?
It depends entirely on scope — a cosmetic refresh is a matter of weeks, a full gut and rebuild with new mechanical and electrical takes longer. Before work starts you get a written schedule with a committed start and end date.
Do you work across Durham Region and the GTA?
Yes. We take on retail projects across Durham Region and the wider GTA, with the same standard on every job — a dedicated point of contact, a written schedule, and permits handled from application to final inspection.
Every project starts with a site visit. Costs and timelines vary too much by scope and square footage to quote in general terms — book a consultation and we'll walk your space and give you a fixed price in writing.
